Does anyone celebrate the Celtic festival of Beltane or May Eve?
Its the holiday of fire, spring and sunshine.
Farmers used to drive their cattle through the Belfire to purify them.
Lovers jump over the fire for luck and fertility.
The Green Man heralds the strengthening Sun.
May poles are danced around, phallic as they are, to bring a tight weave of ribbons to last a year.
Our community gathers to dance, sing and feast; the jester's hat will be passed around at our house this year.
Its a happy time, lets hope we have some good weather!
Ah, I wish we had others nearby to share the festivals with, as we have in the past. With it primarily just being the wife and I, it'll probably be a small ritual either inside at the altar or outside in the stone circle...and then...well, it IS Beltaine after all!
Beltane is celebrated all over the world, but in the form I recognize by Celtic people.
Pagan belief systems have existed in Wales since the time of Arthur.
They were greatly suppressed by the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, heresy was punishable by death.
There have been many Protestant reformations that have demonised our deities.
There was a great re-birth of Paganism in the 60's, which has developed into thousands of groves, covens and lodges all over the world.
The diversity of the craft is mind blowing, from Drudry, Wicca, Shamanism and Eco-Paganism to Gothic, New Age and Sci-Fi based systems.
I will really enjoy Beltane, its for hope and good cheer!
