I found a couple good sites regarding African genealogy.

First one requires you pay with a credit card but is devoted to helping you find your African American roots. I'm not sure how deep it goes, but it comes highly recommended.

Second site is a simple list of links that help you find out about your past African roots as well as tracing the genealogy of several famous African Americans.

Last link give information on tracing genealogy. Not so much your own but dedicated to teaching you how to go about researching your African heritage. In appears as though doing this is no easy task, this site has a well written essay showing you the best way to go about starting and finishing your research.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a new Web page that will make doing African American genealogy research easier. The announcement came during the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society's 28th annual conference, which is being held in Salt Lake City. The African American Resources page on FamilySearch.org will provide links to valuable African American genealogical sources.

I do not know the exact area but in all probability it seems that Hausa/Yoruba area of present day Nigeria. I met a few Nigerians and showed them a foto of my grandfather (mother side of family) and his facial features resembled that group!
I would like to visit Nigeria one day since my grandfather, when he was alive always new Nigeria was his home!
