Dislike For Lying Down
I was watching a Strike Force match on ESPN between two big Brazilians one of which was Belford. I was surprised to see him lying down on his back in the match a number of times for ground combat. It looks so off to see that happen, I rather see someone taken to the mat rather than gracefully follow. What are your thoughts?
Some people prefer ground combat to standing up.
I have a few friends that practice Judo, Ju Jitsu and the Russian martial art Sombo.
The ground is their mother, they use it to great effect. For me being held in a scarf hold, in panic while they are totally relaxed is a scary experience.
For me I like to see when the stand toe to toe as far as putting on a great show. I think though the fighter must do what they do best as they are there to win so if you are a ground fighter go for it and let the best fighter win.
The worrying thing is that some martial arts teach no ground fighting at all.
While some ground fighters cant put together any punches.
I was at an Aikido seminar once, I asked a student of theirs to throw a couple of punches, real ones, at me so I could demonstrate my response. The poor guy did not have a clue. He was about to reach his Dan grade! My twelve year old niece had effective bag work that was much more realistic than his attempt.
My advice is to cross-train in as many styles as possible.
I have seen many men fight and I have come to realize that many do not know how to throw a real punch. Granted they can hit someone but that is all it is just hitting. If your gonna hit something mean it and throw a real punch. All this street fighting show boating is not getting you anywhere. Even these street fight cage ring things are not worth going to half the time.
Young people have serious misconceptions about punching, they sometimes think that if they apply strength over as greater distance as possible the greater the impact.
This is of course contradictory to the laws of physics.
If energy is focused into as small a movement as possible, with the whole body structure moving in unison with it, it gives a strike with much greater force in my experience.
Brute strength always comes second to focus and fluid technique.
