Mormons In A Bar - Page 2

I go to food bars with bearable temptations. I am invited to go to night clubs all the time. I haven't gone to one of these for years. I don't really want to either. I am afraid that I might want a drink or 2. And the noise is down right disturbing to me now. I spent years in a bar and there is something about the stench. It is a rotten tobacco/vomit/B.O/alcohol/dried blood/urine/and much more. You would have to be drunk to deal with that.

A food bar is different. I don't see the big deal. There is a lot of business done in places like that. And seeing the bar kind of puts a relaxed feeling behind a conversation even if you don't drink anything that is behind it. Maybe it is more of a culture thing.

Bar In Mormons

I once heard counsel given to a new Stake President from a General Authority. He said now with his new calling, it was not only important to avoid evil, but also the appearance of evil. You can go into a bar (tavern), a casino, and a variety of places without sinning, but what's the appearance? What if a new convert of the church or a hometeaching family (or any number of people) sees you? What might they think? Just food for thought.

I think this is what I was trying to get at.

It wasn't that I was sinning, it was where I was now (activated) and where I had been (living that lifestyle for a long time) and I didn't feel that it was the right place for me to be and I still don't. I didn't want to even be around it because it could look like I was still participating in that type of lifestyle.

Also I tend to ask myself, would the Prophet be here? I am no where near as spiritual as he is but we ask What Would Jesus Do and try to follow it, I try to do the same with the Prophet. It is just a personal thing too as I do not judge people if they do go to places like that.

Lots of times you do not have to give an apperance of evil, everyone thinks up the evil in their mind no matter what you do. Wasn't Jesus found to be in places where the harlots and drunks go? People back then probably thought that was evil. We have to be careful what we think is evil just because in our little minds we assume it is that way. You can try and make it complicated, but it's as simple as that.

Good explanation! Don't get me wrong, because your one sentence thing really ticks me off sometimes. That is a good explanation though. I didn't really think of it like that.

One sentence thing? I do not know what you are talking about son but it is good that you are able to see the good in my explanation. Christ was asked the same thing 2000 years ago when he wanted to go into the houses of people that many will argue today that Bishops and priesthood shouldn't go into.

You are so correct. While we do need to avoid the appearance of evil we are also told to judge not. Therefore we should each use our own discernment about whether what we are doing is correct or not. I have some recipes I like to make occasionally that call for coconut cream. It is non-alcoholic but used as an ingredient in some alcoholic drinks. It is just made out of coconut milk. Well, here in Alaska the only place you can buy it is in the liquor stores. So if I want to make my recipes I have to go to the liquor store. If someone were to see me in there or see me walking out they may assume I was buying alcohol. Whatever. I know and the Lord knows why I am in there and I won't be losing any sleep over what others may think.

Rather off topic, but...
And they are some darn good recipes!

Well, if you want to stretch it a bit farther, hotels/motels are some of the most sin-ridden places on earth, yet the church actually owns some. Wholesome families stay in them all the time, right in the same rooms where sinful things have happened previously. And many hotels have bars, too.

There ya go, sister.

I could very comfortably go into the sleazy neighborhood bar where I used to hang out and find the same sleazy old drunks (that are still living) and have a lovely visit with them and the bartenders and play the jukebox and shoot some pool... and never be tempted to have a drink or smoke a cigarette or curse or swear, etc etc etc. It's all in the intent. I would also spend some time telling folks about my new life and share the gospel smile.gif Why not?
