Do you like to cook:
1) By reading from a recipe book and following it word for word?
2) By looking and following recipes on various cooking shows?
3) Or are you the next Wendy Rahamut or Rachel Ray? That is, do you experiment and develop your own recipes in the kitchen?

If it is new to me I will always refer to the recipe after all I want to know what is should be like before I customize it or maybe it is already great so I leave it along. I have many dishes I just go with the flow and be creative.
If it's something that sounds difficult, and I've never tried it before, then I'll follow the recipe book to the last letter!
However, if it's something that I've got pretty much sorted in my mind how to do, I tend to just 'throw it all together', , and would never dream of measuring anything out or even weighing it!
Most times I have to say there's never been a problem, it's mainly cakes that you can't afford to take risks with (or at least for me, anyway)
I am sure that everyone on this board realises that I am a "follow the recipe word for word from the book" chef. I may also watch cooking shows and jot down the recipe if it sounds simple. When I am faced to faced with a friend or acquaintance, I hardly ever try a recipe based on what the person said. Why? Well most of the time, people sometimes forget to mention important facts like how long to cook the dish in the oven or on the stove; or if to use a high flame or low flame and believe me, all these facts make a world of difference! I would listen attentively to any new shortcuts to use in the kitchen. This is very helpful to me since I hate cooking and the less time I spend in the kitchen, the happier I will be!
I'm usually a "by the book" cook, except for favorites that are well known. I also tend to "spice things up" more than is called for, and I'm big on substitutions for items the recipe calls for but I don't happen to have. (Who has fresh herbs every day, anyway?)
