Following the marked location on your map, you see the tree zoom into view as you ride towards it. A heat wave after midday clears the sky to a backdrop of deep blue and the low sun lights the tree from behind, giving it an iconic, yet foreboding look.
The area around the tree looks the same as the previous day, with a trampled pathway leading up to a burrow. It is just wide enough for a person to fit through with many fine roots that can be used to help climb down the vertical drop.
When your feet touch ground, your head is still in the hole. Crouching down in the cramped area, you see tunnels about 5 foot wide and tall heading in both directions.
The west tunnel descends slowly, and narrows to 4 feet diameter, before opening into a dark room. You hear mechanical sounds and high pitched voices from there.
The east tunnel descends sharply with roots and stalactites obstructing any good view. It is eerily silent except for the dripping of water.
The noise and the voices quiet as you approach the entrance. The cramped room is roughly 15 by 15 feet and a table sits in the centre with an array of tiny tools and materials. Two tiny, blue mites squint towards the torchlight, one holds a miniature catapult. The other shrieks and moves to draw a dagger.
Roll initiative!
The mites are quick and the one holding the dagger points towards Theaton, its eyes bulge in a grotesque fashion, and you feel darkness in your mind, but manage to shake it off. The other mite fires a caltrop out of the mini catapult, which flies off to the left.
Shivas reacts quickly, drawing her bow, but the shot barely misses Theaton in front of her, and embeds in the roof. Jhod is heard incanting some words and Theaton loses a bit of his sense of feeling, yet also feels healthier inside. "I will take half the damage for you, Theaton," He says, the spell used being Shield Other.
Theaton charges towards the closer mite with the dagger. His sword swings right over the short creature as it ducks out of the way.
The two mites retaliate. A launched caltrop bounces off Theaton's shield harmlessly, but the mite with the dagger lands a lucky hit on the leg (1 damage Theaton, 1 damage Jhod).
Jhod and Shivas continue with volleys from their bows. One goes wide, but another arrow embeds in the chest of the mite in front of Theaton. It exhales and drops, disgusting bulging eyes wide with shock. Theaton advances over the corpse and swings a solid blow to the other mite's neck. You would have expected it to be sliced off, but the mites seemed to have some small resistance to both weapons.
Theaton knows these to be Lawful Evil Fey creatures and they should have a weak immunity to weapons not forged of Cold Iron. Jhod adds "The first action the mite took may have been it's natural ability to Doom creatures and instil a minor fear in them. It is truly a pitiful creature. We should also keep watch for vermin, they often live together."
In the southwest corner is a narrow shaft made of earth and roots that goes vertically down. You hear faint and high pitched shouts of pain.
Shivas asks, "They only look unconscious, not dead. Should I stabilize them? Then the kobolds and mites can come to a peace later."
