"You found and defeated the Stag Lord?" One guard asks incredulously. The other turns around and calls for someone inside.
Kesten digs around in his saddlebag and pulls out the Stag's Helm, to the gurads' gasps. "You are going to be rolling in cash." "Imagine the glory of storming a fort."
The front gate opens and a man some of you recognise as Sgt Nevak steps out. He nods to Mykael and greets Kesten, "So these are prisoners from the Stag? I feel sorry for them walking all this way to be hanged. But Kesten, you should know the policy. You can only transport as many prisoners as you have men to watch over them."
He goes off on a tangent, "That's why the brass aren't promoting you. You have to be more than competent in battle. You have to read policy and fill forms. You have to go beyond what's expected."
"Anyway, do you want to stop for lunch while I get three men armored and geared up to escort you?"
Turning to Theaton and Zork he says, "I feel like I vaguely remember you two, have we met before? I am Sergeant Nevak of Scrag Company, the best river fighters to be squandered guarding a fort in the middle of nowhere." He sighs.
Zork does not remember the man but does not show it and instead waves. He does say, we will be fine, we do not need an escort, we brought them here on our own and we will take them the rest of the way on our own as well. He turns his horse and starts moving along not interested in a response from the Sergeant.
"Bal, Neenah, and Yarrow - I would like to explore some of the surrounding area and see if I can fill out a portion of the map for when the others return. Yarrow, would you care to join Caelum and I on the expedition? You seem a little withdrawn."
At the end Mykael decided to take Akiros' gear along with them and wait to see what sort of sentence the former paladin is given. He does take the magical long sword for now with the intent of perhaps returning it, along with the other possessions, to Akiros if his sentence is one of exile and a return to the front to fight the World Wound. Still, the sword being merely a tool he believes that, in the end, the best way to serve his goddess is through his actions rather than limiting the weapons available to him. So long as it is used in service to her, it need not have the goddess' symbol emblazoned on it. He keeps the long sword with Iomedae's symbol on it with his horse.
"Perhaps the long walk will offer them an opportunity to prepare themselves for the next world" Mykael replies to the Sgt. When the Sgt. Admonishes Kesten Mykael tugs at his armor and glances at Kesten curious as to how he replies.
Sergeant Nevak challenges Zork, "Sorry, but I must insist that you are escorted. It is military policy and I must correct my colleague's mistakes."
Kesten defends himself, "I had no men to spare and this was a mercenary operation. But you are right, we should wait for some men.
At this point Zork is getting quite suspicious. He thinks the guards were acting strangely and now the sergeant's grizzled face reveals nothing to him.
As Zork leads his horse forward, the sergeant turns around too and double times it into the wooden keep.
The sergeant returns with a parchment handing it to Theaton. You recognise the same notice from Oleg's that's been hanging there at least a fortnight.
A drawing of the stag skull just like the ones on the silver amulets you found sits below the word 'WANTED'. Under the picture it says 'The Stag Lord is wanted dead or alive for banditry, murder and preventing Brevoy's glorious expansion into the area. His capabilities and identity are unknown and he has bandits with him. Reward: 5000 gold.' The official seal of Restov is stamped at the bottom, a regal 'S' over a river crossed with a duelling sword.
The sergeant sighs as you walk off. Just over a minute later, when you've covered 300 feet, you see three men, lightly armored and in Brevoy's colours of yellow and white, running to catch up to you.
They slow down before reaching you and when they catch their breath one says, "You didn't make that easy… Sorry but we have to travel with you."
Just before nightfall, you arrive at the small village of Nivakta's Crossing. The gate in its western palisade is decorated with the flags of Brevoy, Rostland and Restov. Upon entering you see it's busier than it has been in a while and the aroma of baking hangs in the air. Market stalls are hawking their goods, children are running around and some people are painting targets and preparing round bales of dense hay. The inn is quite busy, with tents set up in front and a man still constructing an extension on the roof, despite the late hour.
Out of Character: How many miles from our destination? I want to see if a forced march would skip this village.
In Character: Zork looks at his companions looking for their thoughts on this new village or the accompanying guard. He whispers to them, "Think these guards are looking for gold?"
Theaton smiles as they come into town. HE will look at the guards, "We will not be stopping here for the night. We will continue until we are outside this village and make a camp of our own so that we can keep the prisoners under control and not have to worry about one slipping away into the crowd."
Looking back and whispering to Zork, "We will not be paying them any gold. They receive pay from the governments."
