In Character: Zork covers his voice and says, "Just me.." And steps back a bit to light a torch.
Out of Character: Also going with what I said earlier.
Diarmadhim
"We have a good cask of red wine from Pitax," She replies. "It goes well with our steak, cheese and roast vegetable plate."
As you wait for your meal, the budding duelists seem to come to an agreement - longswords or dueling swords at dawn on the 6th, victory at first blood, and no magic.
Another table discusses the difficulty of trade up the East Sellen River. The Boggards of the Hooktongue Slough are not letting up control of their swamp and continue to raid any barges trying to pass through. Even a heavily defended barge carrying soldiers to deal with the threat was sunk with seven survivors of the twenty passengers - just the wizard and those he was able to teleport away. The unfortunate people the Brevoy is sending to colonise and conquer that region will have a very difficult time.
On the other side, a table discusses recent movements of the Spriggan tribes to the south - Spriggans being evil relatives of gnomes knowing no sense of joy. They seem to be trading with each other and banding together at a greater rate. One of the men at the table hopes that they will war against the centaurs so that he can set up his own colony there in relative peace. He doesn't want to rely on Restov's military for support and the other colonists nearby are unknown, so they may not even be able to help.
A wild-eyed man conjectures at another table about the bandits recently arrested by Restov. He thinks that the curse of Gyronna might have transferred to the group that slew the Stag Lord and that the cultists are plotting together in prison. They should be separated because everyone knows that hags work together in covens.
Some town officials are complaining about their boring desk jobs and a tax collector among them complains about the distances he has to cover. An old engineer and bridge keeper, Davik Nettles, used to come to town to pay his dues but hasn't done so in years. His place is in the dangerous land along the Shrike River but it's not worth the tax man's time to go and collect from him.
Party
Theaton could actually make out the figure of a woman up ahead before Zork strikes his flint and lights a torch. The illumination provides more details about her; she wears a bandoleer of potions and crossbow bolts over quality banded mail armor and has a sheathed longsword and kukri. She has a light steel shield on one arm and holds a pouch in the other. Her hair is blazing red and she has a scar on each cheek and a few on her hands.
The light also reveals the corridor is mouldy and muddy over its roughly cut stone. It continues to by 5 feet wide for the next 40 feet and Theaton's excellent eyes see two doors further down. Beyond that, darkness.
"No, sorry," She starts, "I still can't recognise you. Who?"
Zork boasts about passing the guards.
"Well done," She says, a little confused. "But why not just ask to enter? Are you here to see Don Orr? I don't think he was expecting anyone. I'll have to confiscate your weapons and frisk you."
After a pause to listen, she continues "And what the heck is going on outside?"
Out of Character: I'll need some kind of roll, depending on what you're doing be it Bluff to lie, Sleight of Hand to hide your items, Initiative if you go straight to fighting, or anything else appropriate. Depends on your approach, and I don't mind if your characters take a second to whisper to each other to confirm your approach.
Theaton simply states, "Zork it was you who wished to see this person. I am not going to give up my weapons so I will stick here for a bit to allow you to go see this person and come back safely. I will make sure the corridor stays clear."
"I'm with Theaton" Mykael says "I'm not keen on giving up my weapons. There's no guarantee that they will give them back after all."
Seeing that its just one woman who seems easy to pass Zork tries to talk plenty as a distraction so the others can hide their weapons appropriately. Zork hands over his bow and sword as he could not use it in there anyway but hides his silver dagger.
She takes your unwillingness to answer her questions as a lack of confidence or knowledge. Her motive seems to be trying to keep the area secure and avoid violence as any guard would.
Waving the torch as a distraction, Zork uses his other hand to move his dagger to the back of his neck - between his padding and scale armor. The woman takes the bow and longsword (And shortsword and javelins), propping them up against the wall behind her. She then turns to Zork and says flatly, "I have to check everywhere."
She begins by checking items in your pack - closely inspecting each vial. When she gets to the the orange flask she shakes her head and puts it aside. Same deal with the cold iron arrows and sickle, to which she says, "Don't even bother saying you forgot you had those."
Then she checks your boots, feeling up the pant leg and only taking a second to check the groin and behind. She moves up to the chest and down each sleeve, then turns you around and feels up the back to your neck.
"What's this?" She asks as you hear metal slide against metal.
"I can promise you that nothing will harm you down here," Her tone turns threatening, "As long as you follow protocol. Why should I even let you see the Don? What should I tell him about what just happened and who you are?"
Out of Character: And just to make sure, Zork will have the meeting alone since the others don't want to be searched…
Listening in on the various conversations, I make up my mind to speak with the tax collector first. "Hello ladies and gentlemen. I happened to overhear your discussion about a Davik Nettles not having visited town to pay his dues in years - and that he is located along the Shrike River. It just so happens some friends of mine and I have been exploring the Greenbelt Region by charter and I know that the Shrike River runs through it. If you would like, I would be happy to attempt to contact the gentleman for you. Can you give me a general description of him and any way that I would be able to assure him I came on your behalf?"
"Since many of you seem to be town officials - would you happen to have a map that I could look at to make note of the various bodies of water and any other known landmarks in that region? Mayhaps I can treat you to a drink and we can discuss it more?" I suggest, smiling.
