Jesla frowns as she pushes the two man forward ahead of her into the main meeting room. She has a dagger pressed in each of their backs. " Down on the floor thieves. " Jesla kicks their legs out from them and they pitch forward onto the floor in front of the barons. The barons see a tall, wiry barbarian. She has raven black hair that falls down her back in a braid. Jesla is dressed in furs which expose her arms. She has a belted hide skirt that is slit and exposes most of her legs. She has scars on her legs and arms. Jesla also has a scar running along her tanned jawline on the right side of her face. She is pretty but looks like someone not to be trifled with.
She looks at the barons in the room. Her green eyes glint. " These two were found making false gold coins. Such things can not be tolerated. What would you have me do with them? I will be glad to execute them if that is what you decide. The last week or two I have noticed that there is really no one that handles crimes around the fort. People are taking it upon themselves to deal out justice. If no one is available I would be glad to do what needs to be done to enforce proper living. ". She smiles at this.
One eyebrow of mine raises slightly during the odd event, but other than that I say nothing about having noticed the incident. As Kresnik presents Jovvox's offer, I listen intently and jot down the details on some parchment. When he is finished I smile and reply, "Thank you very much for delivering the offer. We will have to discuss it and will contact you upon making our decision."
Theaton is thoughtful for a bit before replying. "Yes I agree we should be peaceful as necessary but be prepared in case others are not so peaceful. As far as laws. We need to be fair to all and no just kill others for an infraction unless it warrants such a action." He looks at Jesla. "Wanting to kill for a small infraction is a good way to scare others. We do not lead this nation with our citizens fearing us. It is easier to lead a people who are happy and productive and who wishes to see that wrong does are punished fairly."
Kresnik hesitates for a moment before speaking up, "Forgive me for interceding, but while she may be a little hasty in calling for their deaths, she is certainly correct on one point. Defrauding currency cannot be tolerated, especially with an economy in such a delicate state as yours is at the moment. Whatever response you decide is just, I suggest rooting out any remaining associates of these two, and making their punishment public.
"It might be better to keep the fact that fake coins exist at all a secret, but I presume the pixie is out of the chest on that point."
"Personally, I'm a fan of indentured servitude, it is not as final as execution, or wasteful as simple imprisonment. Let them work off their debt to you and yours." Edited: daishain on 27th Nov, 2016 - 5:36pm
Theaton agrees, "Yes killing is harsh and uncalled for. I do not plan on keeping a secret that there are possible forged coins out there. Plus they can work off the damage they caused by assisting in the hard labor of road building. Since we did promise Oleg we would build a road connecting this fort and his outpost. Jesla can you make sure they are on the road crew and working hard?"
"Well stated Theaton," I agree with a nod. "It is important that we rule justly and are not overly harsh. The punishment must always fit the crime." Looking to Kresnik, a slight smile plays at the corner of my mouth. "I concur. Previously we had captured some bandits that repented and are serving time while educating themselves to become productive members of society. Because these two didn't harm anyone physically, their punishment should not include any physical harm. I have never understood maiming someone for breaking the law. All it does is cause resentment and force the individual to resort to breaking the law again in order to provide for their self. It creates a vicious cycle, something I hope we can avoid."
"Please see them out Jesla, and place them under guard. The three of us will confer in private to determine a suitable punishment. Kresnik, please excuse us for the time being."
Jesla listens as everyone speaks about the prisoners. Her face hardens a bit when Theaton says that death is too harsh a punishment but she nods while listening. She knows that ruling from fear can be effective. Rulers can't be seen as weak or it undermines their rule. She must remember that these civilized lands are much different than the harsh environment she was raised in. Hearing Theaton speak about putting them to work on a road she almost smiles. " I will be most glad to put them to work there. It will be of the utmost priority to me. " As she finishes Archival speaks. Jesla nods in understanding. " I will see to it. Thank you for allowing me to be the Royal enforcer. I will not let you down. " She looks to the men on the floor. " You heard him. Get up. ". As the men climb to their feet she escorts them out and proceeds to place them under guard to await their decision.
Out of Character: : I assume she has already met all three of you since she has been working there for a few weeks. How should she address each of you? Are titles being used yet?
Out of Character: We are barons, so I guess Baron or Lord in an official capacity, though privately amongst those fulfilling leadership roles Archival would prefer to be addressed just by his name. Being the one that commissioned you and the cavalry archers, he would have made it a priority to meet you - much as he makes it a point to meet everyone in the budding settlement.
