Mormon conversions lag behind huge missionary growth
The stats are staggering.
In the year and a half since the LDS Church lowered the minimum age for full-time missionary service, the Utah-based faith has seen its proselytizing force swell from 58,500 to more than 83,000. That's a 42 percent leap. Ref. Source 9
I have seen the move to have more missionaries, as a way to shore up its membership, and bring in more tithes and offerings; most members are paying less or no tithing or going inactive, and more everyday are leaving the church, especially in the Salt Lake and Idaho area.
Retention has always been a big problem for the church. The only way to help it will be to put full time missionaries as home teachers as well because they do a better job than the regular members. If they grow the missionary force big enough it can be a reality.
