I asked a friend who lives in British Columbia and she does not seem to see a major problem with the economy and job losses even though she is there with a work permit. Having said that, I am reading a lot people being laid off in Canada due to the global crisis.

Strange given the constant plight by Canada to find workers. Perhaps this surrounds high level jobs and not low wage labor.

Nope, no high level jobs but construction related, electricians, etc. They're cutting off jobs a lot in some areas. A lot of English immigrants returning to the UK for that reason. That's why I think if anyone makes a move they need to ensure they go with PR than a merely work permit. Having said that, the country is huge so it all depends on the province.

Rather off topic, but...
Yes, they are constantly looking for workers but as you can see, immigration changes makes it harder now. This is a temporal issue (people losing jobs), important nonetheless.

Unfortunately this is not just losing jobs we are losing employers! Factories consulting firms are closing and the work pulled into the mother companies in the States and else where.

Ontario is one of the hardest hit provinces for this. Make very glad God steered me into this company.

Canada: Austerity bites, employment rate falls again:

Today's labour force numbers are ugly, there's no other word for it. Employment down 29,000 jobs. Paid employment (I.e. Not counting self-employment) down 46,000 jobs. Ref. Source 4
