Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell bested his tea party-backed rival on Tuesday, cruising to a Republican primary victory in Kentucky, CNN projects.
McConnell will face Alison Lundergan Grimes, who CNN projects will win the Democratic nomination, in November. Grimes, the Kentucky secretary of state, would be its first female senator.
In his campaign for a sixth term, McConnell fought off anti-establishment Republicans who threw their support behind businessman Matt Bevin.
