Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran staved off a challenge from Chris McDaniel in the Republican primary runoff. The battle between the six-term incumbent and the Tea Party-backed state senator was extended after neither candidate garnered more than 50% of the vote in their primary election three weeks ago. Cochran is now favored to win the general election against his Democratic opponent, former congressman Travis Childers. Ref. USAToday
