I don't know. If you were to measure the morality of all the actions in my life, and average them out, I'd probably wind up pretty close to dead center on the scale. I'm capable of kindness, and I have been generous (More so with my time than with money, but that's the way I was raised or something), but I have also done some selfish things in my life.
Hmm… I feel that I would be Neutral Good. I follow the law because it is required, not because I think that all of them are justified. I don't believe in causing harm to others and try to help when I can. I'm not a saint but I try to do the right thing.
Malcolm, your point about the alignments being fluid between cultures is very good. I think it comes down to objective truth. If someone believes in God or another deity and their religious teachings there are objective truths that everything is judged from. The example given of killing and robbing from others would be evil. This is my problem with atheism. There is no objective truth. Atheists say I'm a moral person. I don't harm others or steal etc. They are that way because they picked up those standards from the culture they grew up in which is Christian etc. If they grew up in a violent culture they probably wouldn't have the same beliefs. If you don't believe in a deity then nothing matters. Who says that being nice to people and helping others is moral? That's your opinion. Sorry for the rambling rant *smile*.
The problem with applying Dungeons & Dragons alignment to daily life is that realm has objective standards by which things are measured, and active gods encouraging certain behaviors.
I suspect most of humanity would fall under the neutral good or true neutral categories. Few are truly committed to upholding the rule of law, or completely ignoring the same, and even fewer are actually evil. Some just have a sense of what's right that is different from the norm.
For myself, my ideals are NG, but I suspect my actions have me skirting the border between that and TN.
I would classify myself as Chaotic Neutral. I have my own sense of rules that I stick to, but they rarely align with societal rules. I often enjoy toeing the line, just to see how much others pay attention or really care about their rules. I also intellectually believe there has to be a balance between good and evil. I don't seek to do evil things in order to balance good in the world, but I don't condemn people who do evil things instantly either. I find that most acts of 'evil' actually arise out of misunderstandings or disagreements about how facts surrounding a situation should be interpreted.
If you asked most people in my life, I think they would say I am true neutral because very little appears to get under my skin and I am always taking the minority side in an argument (Whether I actually believe that or not), just to lend an interesting view to the conversation. Conversation can't really happen if everyone just agrees with each other.
Make of all this what you will.
I am one that would say I am Lawful good with very neutral tendencies. I believe in the laws and work to see that they are followed to a point. I do however believe that some rules are not enforceable and that we should have the right to seek our own happiness. IF what makes you happy is against the law then do it in a way that you do not infringe on the rights and liberties of others other wise we will have a issue. I am a serious thinker and will try to get everyone to see both sides of a issue so that everyone can find that neutral ground to be able to get along with each other.
