Well the good thing is not a lot of people realize how easy a locking gas cap is to remove. SO you may be safe for a bit.

Gas Stealing

Might keep out the average Joe but one who is serious about stealing gas will know. Still better then nothing and the insurance companies like it when you say it was there.

I do not know a insurance company that covers you for stolen gas. I will have to check into that.

I will have to tie up my Pit Bull to the mirror laugh.gif! Of course, if they got too close she may just lick them to death! It is crazy but like mentioned, it is not new just probably going to get more popular with increased prices. My Brother in Law lives in Seward which is a few hours drive to Anchorage and gas prices there are insane! They get $4.76 for diesel! I would definitely have some type of locking cap if nothing else, so it wasn't so easy for them!

Sorry KNtoran not for stolen gas but sugar in the tank or other mischief and an engine over haul. The gas cap helps then to decide to pay you. I do ponder if you have a big rig and the tanks were emptied then maybe an insurance claim might be not so strange.

Stealing Gas

A nice thought but I am not sure draining over $1000 in diesel fuel would warrant a claim on a consumable product. I think that is something the insurance companies will not touch. I hope that the theft of fuel does not get too out of hand. I would recommend a lockable gas cap.

I hope so too, but we just jumped another dime and hit $3.96--kids will be out of school for the summer next week and will be freer to go run around. I hope that doesn't add to it.

Cool...when they get caught doing it, we can add vandalism to the theft charge!

This will only work if you are in suburbia, but a locking cap and motion detector lighting work pretty good for this as well. Around 1979 (gas shortage), this was pretty commonplace and my father had gas stolen from his car on a couple of nights. He bought the locking cap only to have it ripped off like KNtoran described, so he also but motion detection lighting on the garage looking down the driveway. Apparently, the would be crooks didnt like the idea of being in bright light while doing their deed. It also helped I noticed that when the light went on in the night, if there was someone out there, some of the neighbor dogs would start barking.

One thing that some say works even better is a locking gas cap door. While if someone really wanted to get your gas, they probably can. This would mean that they would have to do some serious damage to the car to get to the fuel.
