I know how the Church feels with regards to crucifixes... Will it make a difference if someone wears a cross instead? Is there an official position on the matter?

As far as I know there is no formal position on the matter, it's all a matter of preference however we like to think of Jesus as a resurrected Christ and that's why we don't wear crucifixes or crosses.
