I have seen some homes built in the south western US I think New mexico that use all their own power and water. They are built out of recycled tires and cans. As they are now very self reliant and use less energy than any normal home. I think building houses this way or like these in australia is the way to go. IF you do not spend as much on utilities you can pocket more money. I would place it like living in a cave.
