Castlerigg Stone Circle
Does the 'Castlerigg Stone Circle' also known as the 'Druid's Circle' have any mystical power?
Castlerigg Stone Circle (Hover)
This is like a mini Stone Henge. How many of these circle stone places do you have across there?
There are thousands of pre-historical stones in Britain.
Some like the Henge and Avebury are world famous, others are invisible, used as foundations for buildings such as churches.
Many are only known by local spiritual pilgrims, and not just circles and standing stones but cromlechs, hill forts and seasonal sun and moon markers too.
Don't think all circles are ancient, we have modern versions too, set aside for our Eisteddfodau.
Modern circles are made out of colums like what the Romans used for their temples? What's an eisteddfodau?
Most modern stone circles look just like the ancient ones, twelve in a circle with an alter stone in the middle.
An Eisteddfod is a Celtic cultural festival. people compete and celebrate music, dance, poetry and art and drama. The ancient druids had them, the tradition of the medieval bards kept them alive. Today the best bard is chaired and another is crowned by the order of the Bards of Wales. There is an international eisteddfod each year where people from all over the world compete. Also the youth festival is one of the largest gatherings for youth culture anywhere in the world.
My wife competed in an eisteddfod for welsh learners last month, I was very proud of her.
I came across many similar circles on the Isle of Anglesey. When we walked through a village sometimes you would also see many burial mounds or unusually shaped stones just pointing heavenward. The thing I love about how the British keep these historical places is that it is clean, protected and sometimes there is a plaque that gives you info on the site.
I never really thought about this part of your country. This makes me want to save up for trip to there. It must be really romatic and mystical to spend with someone special.
