Barrel bombs are oil drums filled with explosives and scrap metal. They act like a huge grenade set to damage a wider area especially human life. Recently, Syria has been facing many attacks with these kinds of weapons. See: Terrorism In Syria.

What makes these really bad is the amount of damage they can do. A typical buried IED will target one vehicle or person but barrel bombs can take out the face of a whole building.
