I'd hope for a swift change in policy in this regard, but I don't exactly think of the military as being swift to adopt needed changes.

This should be swift and the military would be swift, but it has to come from the President. President Truman integrated the military way before the rest of the country even contemplated. There was resistance to be sure, but the military led the way. And when the President ordered it the military did it, regardless of the resistance. And in truth, a bullet doesn't care about the color of you skin, or if you're transgender.

With the way the military is and how they train troops I think that this issue is something that needs to be worked out pretty darn quick. These people volunteered to put thier lives on the line the least we can do is accommodate them and allow them to serve honorably.

Military services told to report their plans to accept transgender troops. A top Pentagon official has called on the civilian and uniformed leaders of the armed services to report on their plans to begin accepting new transgender troops by July 1, according to a memo obtained by USA TODAY. The May 8 memo from Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work instructs the service secretaries and chiefs of the armed services to assess the military's "Readiness to begin accepting transgender applicants on July 1, 2017." Army and Marine Corps ask for at least a one-year delay in developing transgender policy. The Army and Marine Corps are requesting delays in implementing a policy to accept transgender applicants into their ranks, according to government officials. The services had been given a July 1 deadline to develop policies to recruit and commission transgender troops. Under a policy enacted last year during the Obama administration, the Pentagon has allowed transgender troops in the ranks to continue serving; they previously had been banned from the military based on health reasons. If a person is already in the armed forces, and they need to transition, then why shouldn't they be allowed to continue serving their country? They have already gone through the rigorous tests. Its not their fault, they were born in the wrong body.

Yeah, I agree with this. Let me add asking the generals to study this and make a recommendation is the wrong approach. President Truman didn't ask for studies when he integrated the military. He just ordered it. If he'd have asked the generals to study it they'd still be studying. Ask the generals about military strategy, but this kind of policy should be decreed. That's one reason our military is under civilian control.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis may delay transgender policy by six months. The proposed ban on allowing transgender people into the military was supposed to go into place on July 1, but the chiefs of the military services now want a six-month delay. USA TODAY reported earlier this month that the Army wanted a two-year delay, while the Marines favored a one-year delay. Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said Friday that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is now deliberating a recommendation from the service chiefs after they met Thursday with Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work.
