They did have access to guns through trade and capture. What they lacked was unification. Most nations defended their own rather than becoming one grand nation. To much fighting over trivial things allowed the invaders to gain a lot of ground.

I must agree with you Chief if the native tribes could have put the differences aside in the early years a true defense could have been placed.
Do you think that being nomadic hurt as well in that there were tribes that spread between the US and Canadian borders, thus dealing with different issues and tactics.

The nomadic lifestyle is a result of tradition and religious ideals. Generally speaking most nations had too much respect for the earth (Mother) that they could not see disturbing her for their own gain. This is something very much the opposite for the white man who saw the land and then saw the dollars he could make from the land.
