Trinidad Police Slap Man On Wheelchair

What are your thoughts about the video aired by CNews of a WPC and plain clothes police officer allegedly mistreating a man in a wheel chair by pushing him into a car and slapping him about the head?

I saw the edited and unedited video. In the unedited version you can hear the sounds of pedestrians speaking to and about the man. It seems the one man that filmed it urged the man in the wheel chair to go back (After being pushed away by the WPC) to where the police were. The 'videographer' claimed the police can't do him nothing. Upon doing so the plain clothes officer then started to slap the man in the wheelchair about the head. The same videographer did nothing to stop it or even protest. One by stander said that she believed the man in the wheel chair could walk and was only pretending to get money. It makes you wonder which was worst... The police or the people around not helping. At least the video became public.

As a Trinidadian, I don't know what disgusts me more: The abuse of the police officers towards the disabled man or the reasoning behind it.

People doesn't seem to get it. It doesn't matter if the man in the wheelchair was cursing them prior to the abuse, it doesn't matter if the man in the wheelchair is pretending and he can walk (If the allegation is true). NONE of that matter. I'll repeat. NONE of that matter.

The behavior and reaction of the police officers in question was inexcusable and unprofessional. They are supposed to know better. IF the disabled man in question was attacking them, they could have arrested him, detained him, etc, NOT abuse him in the way they did. Such a cowardly act, it disgust me to the core.

BOTH of them should be fired.

LydiaTT, from my layman's observation of the body language, and in my opinion I believe the officers think they were giving the wheelchair man a better deal.

You see, in the first instance the WPC just pushed him away - really she was using avoidance though erratic and dangerous since he was on the street. In my opinion, the wheelchair man had enough time to break before hitting the car but that can be debated. The whole thing should have ended there.

The wheelchair man then was silly enough to confront the officers again and it is then the one male officer could have arrested him - but that would have been difficult work. You are talking about lifting the man up, taking his wheelchair, getting accommodations for him in prison etc. Too much to do so a few slaps and he should get the message not to do it again - old school parent to child mentality in a barbaric culture that lacks honor and professionalism - such is life in Trinidad.

The two Reserved Police Officers in questions have been suspended until the investigation is done. The acting Commissioner of Police described the actions as a "blatant abuse of power".

Comments: I'm trying to understand this case. I just read in the papers that the female police officer was charged with malicious damage and assault by beating.

Yes, she pushed the chair of the man in the middle of the road but she didn't beat him so how come she gets charged with assault by beating and the other police officer wasn't charged as yet because they want to have a parade so he can be identified? Really? So how come she got charged just so and the other man wasn't?

Why they suddenly need an identification parade? What nonsense is this? And how come IF he is charged he will be charged with "Misbehaviour in public office"? What the hell? Misbehaviour? The man slapped the man several times! HE should be the one charged with malicious damage and assault by beating!

TriniSiv, that is also perplexing for me. Maybe there is something more to what happened other than what was shown on the amateur video. The WPC was released on bail. Hopefully the media will follow-up to let us know the outcome.

Comments: JB, the video is just like it was shown. She was given TWO charges for shoveling the chair in the way she did and the other police officer who SLAPPED the man several times, was only given ONE charge (Misbehavior in public office). Is it because the other police officer is a woman? Is it because this male officer has some sort of rank? I want to know! Because I find the whole thing RIDICULOUS! The man BEAT the man in the wheelchair, the woman did not so how come he gets a stupid charge of misbehaviour while the woman is facing two charges?
