Arthur 'Tex' Anders

Bleeding and unable to speak, Navy Lt. Arthur "Tex" Anders scribbled the order to "abandon ship." Japanese bombers had unloaded on Anders' gunboat, the Panay, as it lay anchored on the Yangtze River 28 miles from the Chinese capital of Nanking. It was Dec. 12, 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
