Anthony Kouma
Born in a Nebraska farm town, Kouma enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1942 at age 20. Soon afterward, he slogged through a series of World War II battles in the Pacific. On July 7, 1944, on the island of Saipan, he destroyed two Japanese machine-gun nests. His actions earned him the Navy Cross, the Navy's second-highest award for combat valor, and a mention in Time magazine.
