NDD vs. ADD
How do I know if a child is suffering with Nutrition Deficit Disorder as opposed to Attention Deficit Disorder?
The difference between nutritional disorders and ADD are minimal in effect but vast in cause and "cure". Probably the first step of the process to discover the difference is a complete blood workup AND a hair analysis.
Most American children do not get the actual daily requirement of all the nutrients they need, also if an infant has been on antibiotics it is more likely that child may develop symptoms of ADD because broad spectrum antibiotics also kill all the "friendly" bacteria and enzymes in the digestive system. These bacteria are essential for the break down of minerals from our food and supplements. Any time a child or adult has to go on antibiotics for any reason they should also take natural soil based organisms, and enzymes A WEEK BEFORE, DURING AND A WEEK AFTER taking the antibiotics to maintain the health of the digestive system.
According to a report in CHADD's newsletters (https://www.chadd.org) the only supported information on nutrition and it's positive effect is Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil). Research into other food or nutrition applications suggest a possible sensitivity to salicylates MAY contribute to Hyperactivity (in such foods as Apples) but the clinical studies do not support this supposition in more than a few children. The conclusion being that the child is food sensitive rather than that it is directly affecting the ADHD. Of course eliminating or limiting things like artificial colors and other food additives or too much sugar and keeping your child from eating too much of any one food is just good parenting, anyway. Also there are reports and studies that prove chocolate milk has an effect of hyperactivity in ALL children. Virginia believed these reports and their own observations so well that chocolate milk was eliminated from the school lunch program.
From my own experience with my son, the testing for ADHD often is done with little regard for any other possibilities. If your doctor states that your child has ADHD or ADD, DEMAND the child also be tested for other types of perception problems and mental challenges. In children with both ADHD and CI (Convergence Insufficiency - a vision problem) one condition affects the other and the treatments for ADHD do not address or in some cases aggravate the CI. My son was easier to handle once his vision challenge was addressed. Any other health condition is going to aggravate the ADHD.
