7 to 8 years have passed since I've stayed in Korea.
Thinking of the times when I first set foot on Korean soil and used to make mistakes caused by cultural differences brings smiles to my face.
Taking a look at responses from the American community on the recent "American beef import rejection" candlelight vigils, I felt heartbroken and hoped that fellow Americans would understand the Korean standpoint on the matter.
From the American point of view, understanding the actions of Korean citizens may seem difficult. Americans could feel uncomfortable with the Korean attitude where they respond as if they are being forced to eat problematic beef which 300 million Americans consume without worry.
However, that kind type of behavior by Americans boosts Korean distrust.
If only America had made it clear more actively that American beef is being consumed worldwide without any problems and that the mad cow issue is not true. Koreans wouldn't have reacted this negatively.
It's unfortunate America didn't clarify that we will negotiate and resolve the 30months or more aged beef issue with the Korean government. It cost us Korea's trust in us.
Before everything else, if resolution on this issue drags on and leads to Koreans boycotting American products as well as anti-american movements, it would leave an irreversible wound on both nations. Now wouldn't that be unfavorable for both parties?

Looks like the protesters 'won', but does that apology come only as face value or does he actually plan to do something about it?

It almost sounds like he will pull out of other promises due to time restraints if he has to go back now and renegotiate the trade agreement. He did the right thing by listening to the people. It will be interesting to see what aftermath may occur economically from the decision though.
If I read the story correctly, US Beef is still to be shipped to S. Korea as is part of the agreement. The only difference will be a limitation that bans shipment of >30month old beef. This is a very similar limitation that has been placed on US Beef shipments to Japan. He reiterates the economic need for the agreement to go through and has not totally backed out of anything yet.
I call this a peace offering.
Also, the story says that Lee won the presidency in a landslide. That is a interesting choice of wording for a victory of 47% of the vote with the lowest voter turnout on record. 2 months after his election, his popularity was 28%. Now his popularity rating is <20%. Is this really a huge change? It certainly isnt tied to beef!
The S.Korean people, in general, do not trust their government or the US government for that matter.
I thought the reason for the decrease in his population was completely tied to this but I think you are right it is the other issues that he did not fulfill either. Though his making a deal on the beef did little to help his standings.
