Lapskaus (Hover)
Lapskaus is a traditional Norwegian leftovers meal. It would normally contain potatoes, carrots, and meat, as well as any remnants of other meals. This is all simmered in gravy for some hours. According to my grandmother, it's even better if you add a slice of brunost (A type of whey cheese popular in the Scandinavian countries).
I would give this food the maximum acceptable rating. It tastes very good indeed, sits well in your stomach, and is relatively simple to make. Its only disadvantage, in my opinion, is that it carries a significant risk of overeating as a result of its positives.
Hmmm, sounds delicious!
When I lived in Liverpool, one of the traditional stews in the city was called Scouse. The ingredients are almost the same as Lapskaus (It often includes peas too). It's so popular that, although the official name for the city residents is "Liverpudlian," They and everyone else call themselves "Scousers."
"Scouse" Is probably a shortening of "Lobscouse" Which was a popular stew in the British Navy at the time of Nelson. This name is even closer and I wonder how far it goes back - were our Viking ancestors wolfing down lapskaus in the dawn mists as they prepared themselves for an attack on a Northumbrian monastery?
