Medieval Myths

Do you think that people really believed in some of the myths that circulated about orcs, dragons and fairies? Someone in my class was saying that these things were just fed to the people to keep them devoted to certain kingdoms, keep them paying taxes and loyal and in turn their lord would 'protect' them.

Yes. They believed them. The Bible actually talks about monsters such as dragons, leviathan, and satyrs. So, the people believed them. Some people believe them even today. Check the forum

Never really heard of orcs outside of Tolkien and D&D.

A lot of the legends and myths we here today has been passed down from one generation to the next over a long long time. It can date back to the medieval times or beyond. You have to remember a lot of sayings we have today also date back to then.

Thanks for the replies. Science at that time was very limited and so there needed to be an explanation. Just imagine, most questions about things around us can be answered. For instance lightning does not come from Zeus, there is a reason for it. Storms do not magically appear, but that has a reason for starting too.

Yes storms have a reason for starting they are coming for me. smile.gif

Yes the way science was back then it was in the early stages of finding out how the earth ticked. Swamp gas igniting was a dragon's breath. So as time passed we found out the cause of a lot of what they thought were monsters were nothing more than the earth, air, fire, or water making its presence known to us.
