Avg Anti-virus

This is a two fold message. The first part is a review and the second part is a notification. First, the review:

This is one of the best pieces of free software on the net, and I can well imagine that the paid for version is even better. The downloadable updates are available almost on a daily basis and it finds sneaky worms and viruses in real time. Best of all, it is not like Norton where it hogs and takes over system resources!

Second, AVG has announced that they will discontinue their current AVG engine by January 31, 2005. At first when I saw this I was scared that it would no longer be free, but they still have a dowloadable free version! Thank you AVG. Make sure you update before the date.

So does this mean that you would have to redownload a new free version of the AV to replace the existing one? I use AVG AV and I love it as well. Do you have any details on this, ie, a web link? Thanks JB!

The reason I did not give a link is due to the fact that the message came with the latest update which you will notice requires a restart of your computer. When you restart the message comes up with all the details including four options - one of which is to replace your current AVG engine.

I have already downloaded the newer version, I really like it. One thing though, it says it will automatically delete the old system but I still have a *shadowed icon* of the old system, and each time I turn on my computer a *help balloon* pops up and says that my AVG program is out of date. There is also a trailer with my emails that says the AVG is out of date, then below it says that this email was scanned with AVG 7.0(something).

I am going to totally delete the AVG program using XP's *Remove* capabilities, then download the new version once again and see if that clears up the problem.
I'll let you all know if that clears up the problem.

I had no problems installing it -- although it does tell you that you must uninstall the previous version before installing the new one. I love AVG!! As JB pointed out, it doesn't try to take over your whole system, it just works in the background and takes care of things.

The new interface has more features. I like it, so far. I ran a complete test with the latest update, and all systems are clear. Thanks for the heads up, JB!

I didn't actually read it on the website, but had a pop-up message during installation. I'm running Win2000 Pro, so apparently we have a difference in the O/S install script. Glad you're having no trouble now!

Observations

After installing this I realize that the new AVG is:

1. A resources and memory drainer which makes multi-tasking difficult

2. It does not allow you to schedule updates so that can also be a drain when your machine suddenly starts slowing down because of the scanning. Yes, you can stop it, but if you are in the middle of something it could mean the difference between system crash or disconnection.

3. In 'Updates' it gives you various options to download, but when you try to download it does not work.
