American military figure died over 100 years ago at an age over 50, wrote some books, wasn't necessarily wealthy but not in the poorhouse. And was never married. That's the kicker, I can think of several that kind of fit the bill but they all were married. I'll have to think on this some more...

I will tell you I had to a lot of reading before I found out that he was never married. That is what plagued me the most because I never had a definite answer. But I did find it out and yes he was never married. He left his home to his sister when he died.
