Let's say they decide to revive the Matrix theme with a new actor, who do you think could be a good candidate as neo besides Keanu Reeves?
What about Ryan Goslin do you think will make him a good Neo besides the fact that a lot of women seem to like him.
To me, it depends on if you are reviving The Matrix, basically adding onto the storyline, or rebooting The Matrix by telling the same or similar story with a different cast. If you revive it, you have the whole range of actors to use based on the story you want to write. Want to make a story about a sisterhood of Matrix warriors idolizing Trinity who prune the world of the Matrix in their own image? I could imagine plenty of strong lead actresses for the role (Like Scarlett Johansson, perhaps), or maybe you could go with someone who is a relative unknown. Perhaps a prequel about a group of hacktivists who tried to battle the Machines before they took over the vast majority of the human race would fit your script needs? I could see an intellectual-seeming star like a Benedict Cumberbatch for this role.
If you're more interested in rebooting the world and retelling Neo's story, you want someone who can conjure empathy as an "Everyman" Who becomes a superhuman force. There is a large group of leading men to choose from. I think the director would lead you to the actor. The feel of the movie the actor would invoke through the lens the director casts would have a significant impact on the story that gets told. Having a Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration would look vastly different than if Chris Pine and JJ Abrams worked on it. I would personally hope to see something new and creative come out of such a project, and I would favor revival over rebooting. I think the events of the movies so far could spin off several great stories in that world, in either chronological direction.
Scarlett Johansson may get away with her roles in the Avengers but I can't see her as a Neo type, not even a Trinity type which gives rise to something I just thought about. Why does Neo even have to be male, we could have a Trinity in the Neo role.
I'm not entirely sure why so many people dislike Johansson as an actress. Perhaps she is a bit overexposed, but there are very few roles she has ever been in where I was unconvinced in her character. Still, it was a point of my post that a reboot could take several different forms. If you want a reverse-gender slant, however, you'd have to convince the brass that the audience would draw. You'd want some serious star power for that one. At least if you spun off a new story with different characters, you'd gain some latitude, I expect.
