What is the "Focal Infection Theory" that involves the Root Canal Cover-up?

Theory Infection Focal
The focal Infection theory is based on the mouth allowing infections and other diseases to be introduced into the body by growing in the oral cavity. This in turn could lead to problems not associated with the mouth.
I think that dentistry has come a long way in being able to stop routine mouth exams. cleanings and even tooth extraction or root canals from being a source of what many believe to be focal for infection.
