Buenos Aires (AFP) - Business-friendly conservative Mauricio Macri will take office as Argentina's next president Thursday, opening a new era of free-market policies after 12 years under left-wing power couple Nestor and Cristina Kirchner. Macri, 56, has vowed to kick-start Latin America's third-largest economy by ending protectionist import restrictions, cutting heavy taxes on agricultural exports and scrapping the official exchange rate puffing up the Argentine peso.
