I am always torn in situations like this. I do believe that sometimes bad things happen to good people but on the hand also believe that things can happen for a reason. It makes me wonder how the family that raised them as their own feels. I understand finding your "real" parents and that side of it. I just can't help but feel for the family that gave what they had to raise them.

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish twin, separated from her family for 28 years, is suing the Canary Islands for a mix-up at the maternity hospital which led to her being taken home by the wrong mother, media reported Wednesday. The woman discovered she had an identical twin when she was mistaken for someone else in a shop in 2001. The two sisters , who were not named, found they were born in the same hospital in 1973 around the same time and a DNA test subsequently showed they were identical twins. "In 1973 there were two assistants and one supervisor for 60 babies," Densi Calero, who worked in the maternity unit of the clinic at the time, told local radio. "It's not impossible to imagine something like this could happen." The woman is suing the Canary Island health services for 3 million euros ($4.7 million) for emotional trauma, El Pais newspaper reported. "I wish I'd never found out about it," her lawyer quoted her as saying. Her sister was brought up alongside another girl, believing they were twins. |

I can understand them sueing the hospital. I would have hated to be mised up like that. Who was the girl she was raised with? Where is her birth parents now? All of this could have and should have been prevented. To try to say we were understaffed and this was allowed to happen is just nothing more than an excuse. I as a father would hate to find out the daughter I was raising was not my child when I was there to see the birth. A hospital mix up like this can lead to some serious issues later on in life. I wonder how many mixup there were while they were understaffed?
I can understand she would have been upset finding out as every one would be. Including both sets of parents. Now I see no reason both families should not be compensated for this as no particular person is more injured by this then the other. Understaffed over work is no excuse. The crime there is the hospital should have had proper staffing period.
I hope both families can see the light that they can now come together as a larger family and I hope that one girl was not socially and financially better off then the other. Thus causing jealously between the real twins.
As far as I am concerned the child they raised is theirs as the bond was built and made. At this point the twins might not even like each other and if they were smart they would just change the path their are on and be content with their lot in life. Trying to recreate something that never was might just cause more hardship[ then it is worth.

I as a father would still love and care for the daughter I raised. I would not stop loving anothers child if I raised them. I know there is a bond between this daughter and her parents that raised her. I doubt she will turn her back on them. Raising step sons as my own sons has taught me a lot about caring for someone elses children. I just hope that when they are out on their own they will still consider me their father.
I can see where this would cause some turmoil for you to work through. But I see it as less of a big deal than the one where the two babies were switched and one of them ended up with a congenital heart defect and died. The switch was discovered during her illness through routine testing. The family that raised her then sued to get their biological daughter back. She was still a young girl and here they were tearing her away from the only family she had ever known. Sometimes I think we need to think more about what is best for the child and suck it up as adults.
As an adult you can work through your issues and when you finally emerge on the other side you can get on with life and enjoy your expanded circle of family and friends. With children you are setting the child up for all kinds of potential problems.
