I went and read this article and was surprised to see he did a Miller Lite commercial. He talked about how he didn't drink, and actually neither did the other actor. It was about providing for his family.

I am not sure what I think about it actually. He is a well liked and funny LDS star and puts out gospel music as well. So as a role model to young LDS kids---and what about the whole "abstain from even the appearance of evil" ? What are your thoughts?

I suppose it paid the bills. I don't know what his circumstances are and so really cannot make a judgment on his particular decision. I am sure there are decisions I have made that have caused some raised eyebrows. As long as I know I am doing what is best for my family and I have come to that decision prayerfully with my husbnd then I don't worry too much about what others think. I am suspecting that Kirby would tell us the same thing.

As a role model? It would be nice if every prominent person always made the correct choices and never showed their human side. It would make it easier to be parents. But since that is not the case, I would suggest we teach our children correct principles and when these situations come up have an open conversation with them. Ask them the question you asked the forum. Discuss why it is or is not inappropriate. Discuss situations in your children's lives where they may have to make tough choices and how they will make them. Discuss what it must be like in the spotlight with everyone looking up to you. Remind your children that they are no different. There is always someone watching, what kind of example are they(we) setting?

Role model? I think is a pretty big responsibility to put through to someone that just happens to be an actor and did not choose to be such a model. Parents should be aware of this when teaching their kids and they should not expect these "role models" to act in any particular way, LDS or mot. That's just my opinion.

Now with regards to his work, we don't really know him neither his circumstances or even testimony of the Gospel. I suppose the comment of providing for his family could mean that when you have to put food on the table sometimes you do things you would not normally do in order to provide. I am not justifying anything just stating what I think happened.
