Debate: Play By Post vs Table Top Rpgs

I know this is going to bring on all angles but let's debate a bit. What are the pros and cons of play by post over table top versions of the same Role-playing Game system? Lots of opinions can come out but what the major differences and similarities as well. We here are all doing Play By Post so its obvious that Play By Post scores some big points over table top live meetings so let's hear it. wink.gif

Rpgs Top Table Post Play Debate

In my mind the biggest positive with play by post is that you don't have to get everyone in the same room at the same time and somehow put your normal life on hold for a few hours every week or two.

The biggest positive with face to face games is that you can get immediate feedback and interactivity. You can act out scenes and do funny voices. That can make the game a lot more entertaining.

For me Play By Post is very relaxing. You can take your time developing what you want your character to say or do without someone tapping the table waiting for you to say something. The other thing I like is being able to read what is happening and digest it slowly. Of course things happen faster in person but that's about it once the game is done its forgotten but not with Play By Post.

Rpgs Top Table Post Play Debate

There are so many options for Play By Post in this site** over Table Top. Here are the advantages of Play By Post:

1. You have a record of your Campaign and the input of all Players.

2. You can review all the Posts that showed the way a GM / Dungeon Master handled a past game to see if you would like to join in one of his / her current Role-playing Games or not.

3. You are able to think before you write and thus be very descriptive about your Character's movements, words and actions. Real writers love this.

4. You do not have to be inconvenienced by having to meet at a certain place for a certain time. Keep your job and your spouse too!

5. You do not have to like the person that's next to you, put on a cheerful face or anything. You could be at home in your pajamas or on the subway and play at anytime without having other Players analyze the way you look, dress or sound. Similar Topic: Autism & Role-Playing Games

6. Your Character Sheet can be more creative and stylish. People can actually see what you put on there or with some of the enhancements available (Guardian / Gems) you can make your Character have the edge over others.

7. You do not have to worry about fudged rolls, the Anti-Cheat Dice takes care of that.

8. You do not have to worry about real life drifters, topic hijackers and trolls that would otherwise make you feel timid about how you handle your Character - here, those types aren't allowed to throw up any 'acid'.

** I have to emphasize this site because my points do not apply to Play By Post on other sites as much of what is available here is custom coded.

Another benefit of Play by Post, though one that only works if players are good at keeping meta knowledge separate from character knowledge, is that you can go into more detail on what your character thinks and feels. So every action and give reason to behaviors less able to be explained when you roleplay in person around others.

Also, you can still type accents though you can't speak the yet also more importantly have a character speak in another language with a translation provided for those with characters that can understand what is being said. With this, you can even have two NPCs talk in another lange with the chance of no one understanding what is being said.

Besides all the reasons listed for me its simply convenience. I'm on the go and use my phone to play so while I'm waiting on something I check in, read what has happened and then respond.

Debate Play Post Table Top Rpgs

I am a BIG supporter of Table Top gaming. I love the human interaction. I study psychology, sociology, and interpersonal communication, while I Role play. Play by Post does not afford me this option.

My personal Pro for Play by Post is the improvement in my writing skills. Anything that helps me improve and refine my writing skills is a good thing.

Combat is normally much faster in tabletop play over play by post, finishing an encounter in minutes to an hour or so at most compared to the full day or more of play by post mattering how often players and the Dungeon Master can post.
