While my daughter (at age 10) was visiting her dad last summer, her Aunt Deb took her to see this movie. I hadn't heard anything about the movie at that time, and didn't know she'd seen it until after she came home and wanted me to go, too. I knew it was a musical, and that Meryl Streep was in it with three "hunky" guys, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård, but that's about it. So, when my daughter asked for the DVD for Christmas I thought nothing of it.
Well, let me tell you how unsuitable this movie is for kids. It's rated PG-13 for "some sex-related comments." Excuse me?! The whole movie revolves around sex in some highly inappropriate ways, there is blatant alcohol abuse through the whole movie (one line from the movie is "this is what you have to do so you can drink before 11:00 in the morning!"), it denigrates marriage, and sneaks in the approval of a homosexual relationship.
For grown ups, it has some really, really funny scenes, and many of us may know folks who lived through those hippie days of the 70's, and -- of course -- there's that ABBA music. Meryl Streep does a great job (who knew she could sing? ) as do the darling men. Amanda Seyfried is cute as a button and horribly confused!
I recommend it for *adults only*
