Anyone A Scout?

One of the best ways to learn about survival is to join your local scout troop. You will not learn military type survival, but you will learn the basics, sometimes you can even learn as much as a professional save for combat if you have the right teachers.

For the US the highest is Eagle Scout and Varsity Scouting, other nations will go by different names. This thread is intended for you to list your early survival learning and to say if you received any 'ranks' or 'certificates' through scouting or other club.

Scout Anyone

I was into scouting from an early age and did it both in the US and Trinidad (British system). In Trinidad our scout leader was a military officer so you can imagine... We were treated like cadets, I did not like it much. In the US I did cub scouting and was going for my Eagle but unfortunately had parents that had an obsession with moving and never completed it. I am grateful for all I learned though since just before my mission I was able to start a small scout troop and take around 14+ young men on various camps and hikes through the mountains and sea. I would definitely encourage any young man (Woman?) to get into scouting.

I made it to Webelo,it is only the first rank as a BOY scout,I made it through the cub scouts first of course.It was truly a learning exp. for me.My dad worked a lot when I was young,so the scouts was a good place to learn things like survival,tying knots,fishing.lots of good stuff.everyone should be so lucky.

I went through Cub Scouts, Webelos received the Arrow of LIght, Boy Scouts made Eagle Scout, was the patrol leader of the Explorers, Assistant Junior Scoutmaster, Was a Ranger at Camp Victorio in Arizona for the summer. Also a member of Order of the Arrow.

I really liked that camp, it was great being up there and now its closed because people feed the bears. When I was up there I never saw one. It was a great camp and you could go repelling, 50 mile hikes and earn merit badges or at least partial ones. I taught pioneering, wilderness survival and camping merit badges.

I know a younger scout that earned every merit badge there was, that is impressive. I think scouting has changed very much from when I was in, never expected a merit badge for video games.

Scout Anyone

I was a scout as a cub scout and later a few years as a boy scout. Due to me dad changing jobs a lot I did not get many of the higher awards and I ended up in a town that the scout master just wanted to do stuff to help his son and his nephews get ahead and no one else mattered. That left a bad taste of scouts in my mouth but I do know it is a good organization for others.
