More r-pe victims know attackers
"During the course of 2007, a total of 92 cases of r-pe were counselled by the r-pe Crisis Society of Trinidad and Tobago. Thirty-nine of those persons were raped by someone they knew," she said. Sixteen of those persons, she added, were raped at the home of the perpetrator, six of them did not say where the assault occurred, but five of them indicated that it happened at their homes. Others were raped in cars, on the street, at school, a neighbour's home or a canefield.

The Media is just highlighting these cases. Rape is a very common crime in Trinidad and has been for years. Maybe more women now feel the need to report it but how many unreported rapes exist?
I heard a stat from some US marshalls and FBI agents when we were sitting around talking about crimes. They stated that for every rape or sexual assault on women there are four to five that are not reported. Many they feel are being committed by family members or relatives and the women do not want to report them. Now whether this is true or not I have no clue but it does make a lot of sense. Especially when you consider that most crimes like this are committed by people they know.
