Based on Roger Zelazny's Amber novels, this game is a fine homage. You play a member of the royal family of Amber, the one true place. You walk through Shadows, reflections of Amber cast between the real place and Chaos. Among those countless shadows is a quaint little place called Earth. You move through them, bend them to your will. Need an army? Travel to a Shadow where you are worshiped as a god.Need a pile of gold? One awaits you, a mere shadow walk away.
Amber Diceless would excel in a Play by Post format, as it is entirely narrative driven. Characteristics are determined by auction, with each player bidding some of his or her points (Its been a few years, so I'll guess 100 points.) on each of the four stats. Whoever has the highest value wins any disputes involving that stat. The closer the stats are to each other, the more dramatic the description, but the outcome is never in doubt. There are other things to get also. Weapons intrinsic to your legend, companions to aid you as you stride through Shadow. Your level of attunement to the great Pattern of Amber, or its opposite number, the Logrus of Chaos.
I wish I'd played this game more than I did. It was my first real taste of narrative based roleplay, and I enjoyed it tremendously. If you can find it, and the works of Roger Zelazny intrigue you, than this game is a joy.
