Shadowrun was originally created by FASA corporation, but has recently been acquired by Catalyst Game Labs. The setting is a fascinating blend of Dungeons & Dragons style fantasy and a dystopian Cyberpunk future, where international Megacorporations are nations unto themselves. You wouldn't think it would work at first glance, but the world holds together quite well for my taste.
The game is currently in it's fifth edition, but the story has not changed with each passing of the torch. Instead each team of creators has elected to extend it. Events and characters from the earliest iterations of the game still exist, either as history, or real powers in the world. In a setting this rich in history and detail, there are many, many stories to be told.
Character creation is priority based, with players deciding what order Attributes, Skills, Race, Magic and Resources play their roles in their lives. Playing a metahuman species (Ork, troll, elf or dwarf) requires a higher Race priority, Mages need to assign a high priority to Magic. Deckers and Street Samurai (Heavily "Chromed," aka cybered warriors) need resources to afford their gear and equipment. This latest edition does a great job of offering more options, especially for magicians, allowing them access to higher priorities at the cost of some of their power.
The system is a pretty rules dense but after a while it starts to make sense. Ou do have to work for it though.
The SETTING, on the other hand, is magnificent, and one of my favorites out of all the games I've played or read.
You could run it Play By Post, but it works best over a table, for my money.
