D20 Modern is an interesting take on the D20 system popularized by 3rd edition Dungeons & Dragons. It brings the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons to the modern era, and does so in what I think is a pretty interesting way. Instead of having a character class based on one's profession,(After all, who wants to play a level three Lawyer?) the class is based on one of the character's Attributes. One doesn't play a Fighter. One plays a Strong character. Or if brawn isn't your thing, you can be Smart, or Fast, or Dedicated (If you're wise enough.). Multi-classing is not just easy, it's encouraged, and there are plenty of prestige classes to customize your character.
The game didn't last long in production, so there aren't that many supplements available for it. Urban Arcana is the urban fantasy setting, and there is a D20 Future book for Science Fiction adventures, although they don't have a specific setting for that genre.
If you've played 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons, you already know everything you need to about the mechanics of the game itself. It is the D20 system, after all. It is exactly as suitable for Play by Post as Dungeons & Dragons is.
