Deadlands holds a special place in my heart, as it was the first game I was ever paid to write for. It is a delightfully campy horror western setting, with a system that plays into the atmosphere it is to establish beautifully. Set in the Old West (Go figure) characters can play any one of a number of classes, from a Native American Shaman to an Undead Gunslinger, to a Mad Scientist cranking out amazing, if unreliable, inventions that defy science as we know it.
The opposition is terrifying. . .literally. They are called the Reckoners, although that name is known to only a very few individuals, and their purpose is to spread fear, that they may feed and grow mighty. They have many servants, Abominations that do their will, either consciously or for their own twisted ends, and these are the creature the characters are called upon to defeat. With names the the Hangin' Judge and the Texas Tummy Twister, they add a lot to the atmosphere of the game.
You'll need a full set of polyhedral dice to play, as well as a deck of playing cards (Jokers left in, please) and some poker chips. Your attributes are a die type (D6, d10, etc.). These are determined by dealing yourself a hand from the deck. High cards are good. Jokers are. .special. They indicate something weird, and probably a bit evil, is about to happen. But at least they are wild, so there's that.
Deadlands relies heavily on the playing cards to resolve a lot of the mechanics, so if you aren't on a platform that somehow supports that, play by post will be difficult.
