RPG Flight Fantasy Game Roleplaying Wars Star

Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) Star Wars is the third published Star Wars Role-Playing Game, behind West End Games (WEG) D6 and Wizards of the Coast (WotC) d20 & Saga.

Three Corebooks to date (14May2015) have been released. Edge of the Empire 2013. Age of Rebellion 2014. Force and Destiny 2015.

Each of the different publications of Star Wars has used a different dicing system. WEG was strictly d6s. WotC used the mixed polyhedrals common in Dungeons & Dragons. FFG has proprietary polyhedral dice, namely d6, d8, d10(D100), and d12. These FFG dice are color coded and bare theatric/dramatic markings.

The d6 dice are blue and black. Blue (Boost) have Success (Burst) and Advantage (Planet above Wings/Rebellion) markings. Black (Setback) have Failures (Solid Triangle) and Threat (Galactic Empire) markings.

The d8 dice are green and purple. Green (Ability) have Success and Advantages. Purple (Difficulty) have Failures and Threats.

The d10s are used but there are no proprietary FFG variants. Simply used for percentages.

The d12s are yellow, red, and white. Yellow (Proficiency) have Success, Advantage, and Triumph (Circle with Burst and Sword). Red (Challenge) have Failure, Threat, and Despair (Circle with Empty Triangle). White (Force/Destiny) have only circles: hollow (White) and filled (Black).

Dice pools are constructed of Blue, Black, Green, Purple, Yellow and Red. The Blue, Green, and Yellow dice are generally player descriptive dice. The other three Black, Purple, and Red are generally GM descriptive outcomes.

The markings when rolled can cancel each other out.
Success - Failure;
Advantage - Threat;
Triumph - Despair.

For an action to succeed, requires only one Success be rolled and not be cancelled out.

Star Wars Roleplaying Game Fantasy Flight RPG Reviews RPG & Card Board

I played and tested this version of the Star Wars Roleplaying game produced by Fantasy Flight, and I was not impressed. The books are very neatly done, and have a wealth of information in each one perfect for playing the game - or even just adding more Star Wars lore to those who love to find out various things.

However, the game mechanics did not work out for me and my players. For two years we fought over how to mold the mechanics to where they actually made sense. Sadly, this struggle recently came to an end. The dice system is not the problem, however, but the ability to decipher ranking with the characters.

This problem mainly begins with the idea of starting characters out at Jedi Knight play for more advanced character creations. The immediate problem is the amount of extra experience points given to upgrade the characters is not on par with what Star Wars fans would expect a Jedi Knight to do. The point buying system does not allow for a player to purchase enough Force Talents, Training, and etc to be anywhere close enough to feeling like a Jedi Knight.

I eventually came up with a different experience point system which made more sense, but still had no real basis for it to see versus actual characters within the movies and books. At best, I managed to make it to where players advanced to the rank of Jedi Knight after obtaining about 1,200 XPs. From the books, such was suppose to happen at only an extra 150 XPs beyond character creation (Usually around 100 to 120).

If this problem could be solved by Fantasy Flight Games; then the system overall would likely work.
