Do you think that collaborative storytelling can help build your skills as a writer?

Collaborative Storytelling has helped build my writing skills. Of course I'm no where near the creative abilities of a professional but at least I can form a colorful sentence that is understood well enough to carry on a scenario.

I don't know. I've collaborated twice but it was all a bit of fun. It makes your think differently because how you think the story may go, gets pulled into a direction you didn't even think of. Id like to give it another go, I think, but its hard to start. I think it also depends on the person who collaborate. You need to find someone who isn't completely opposite to you.

You need to find someone who isn't completely opposite to you.

We have this style of writing here within certain Role-Playing Games (See TextRPG.com) for a proper full explanation. For instance there are two Players (Writers) looking for a third participant in Girl's Night Out Role-playing Game . You can read that and see how it went and where it should go.

There is also a different approach - a Character blog. In this there may be interaction from other Characters but largely its you describing a Character's day. Lets take Gwynedd as an example. It has a pyramid system where each Character wants to be 'top' of the village. How they get there depends on their ability to 'scheme' their 'blog' and make purchases with FP. See how the Fortune Teller is doing it.

Lastly, there is another kind where the Dungeon Master provides a story line and the players make the actions and role-play what happens in the group through posts. We refer to this as "Play by post".

Jchampers, with your writing background you participation will be most excellent in one of these should you wish to pursue this kind of writing style.

During camping trips, we would sometimes have a person start off a story, then he/she will say something like, "Then he/she ..." And pass the story to the next person and so on. It was fun and creative to see how a story will turn out with different creators and no known outcome.

Its very useful when you have writer's block. I remember having to write conversations and would ask someone nearby what they would say if I said.... The response I would get is more original that if I had to invent it so its really great. If you're doing it just because its fun then that's all good too.
