Sheriff Joe Arpaio (Hover)
Trump pardons former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, an immigration hard-liner who was convicted in a racial-profiling case. The White House announced Friday that President Trump had granted a pardon to Joe Arpaio, former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz. "After more than fifty years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon," the White House said in a statement. Ref. USAToday.
I think that the case against him was mostly made up but still had a bit of truth in it. Sometimes one does need to racial profile to solve some crimes. While racial profiling is not a good way to solve everything it is done and if done correctly it solves the case.
KN, I agree with you. So let's see. He was a sheriff in Arizona where they have a huge illegal immigration problem. It's so bad those who live near the border are in danger. So, is he going to spend precious resources stopping white ladies with blond hair to check if their American citizens or recent illegal arrivals from Sweden. Hm, I don't think so. If nearly 100% of the illegal immigration problem is Latino then you should probably check the Latinos.
Yeah, that's easy for me to say right? Well, I'm of Greek and Italian descent but I am 100% American. And if the problem was either Greeks or Italians I'd say check the Hell out of everyone who looks Greek or Italian. And [By The Way], my skin color and features could be mistaken for Middle Eastern, so I invariably get checked at airports, even after I show them my military ID. You don't hear me complaining. I'd rather they check everyone that looks like me than waste their time on the nun in the next aisle… at least until nuns start bombing our country.
Having been in law enforcement myself I am one that knows how racial profiling can be put to use in a bad way and that is just not right. I would stop that type of policy very quickly as some can go totally over board with it. Now if racial profiling is used in the correct way you will be better able to find the subjects and solve the issue. Just like if you hear of a bank robbery committed by a white guy. You are not going to stop the Hispanic or the black guy you are going to stop white guys.
We are talking about a guy who among other things:
-Framed another man for a fake attempt on his own life (The guy spent four years in jail before it was revealed Arpaio bought the bomb parts himself)
-Attempted to destroy evidence related to his racial profiling case
-While in charge, cost his county over 40 million dollars in terms of innocents wrongfully arrested via racial profiling
-Ran something HE HIMSELF called a concentration camp, the 1-2,000 latino prisoners kept within died at alarming rates (By which I mean in comparison to similar prison populations, not just in general), usually with no explanation. The justice department on multiple occasions accused the facility of denying its inmates basic human rights.
As uncomfortable as I am with it, I will freely acknowledge that racial profiling, when reasonably applied, works. But it is quite clear that not only has this man gone well beyond the point where such profiling is reasonable, he has not served this nation with anything resembling distinction.
