The British army will officially end its peacekeeping role in Northern Ireland on Tuesday after a 38-year presence that has involved more than 300,000 personnel and cost the lives of more than 750 soldiers.

I can understand the need for N. Ireland even as recently as a couple of decades ago. However, with powersharing and the EU, what is the benefit of actually having a separate N. Ireland? Is it for the British citizens in N. Ireland? Do they retain some sort of benefits? If there is anyone from this area that has some insight or an opinion, please respond.
Rather off topic, but... I find it ironic that it took 38 yrs to achieve the goals of the peacekeeping effort and we are looking to bring toops back home after just a few years in Iraq...food for thought. |
