"Where today are the Pequot? Where are the Narragansett, the Mohican, the Pokanoket, and many other once powerful tribes of our people? They have vanished before the avarice and the oppression of the White Man,as snow before a summer sun.
"Will we let ourselves be destroyed in our turn without a struggle, give up our homes, our country bequeathed to us by the Great Spirit, the graves of our dead and everything that is dear and sacred to us? I know you will cry with me, 'Never! Never!'"
I often wonder if the current US citizens give any consideration to the natives of the country. Ronald Regan (I believe, can't remember all the details) gave the Indians tax free living, which I thought was a good start.

It is strange that no one has touched this topic, or maybe it is not? I would like for a Native North American Indian to be part of this thread. If any members know of such a person that would like to become a member and contribute positive thoughts and arguments, please invite them.

Do you think these communications do anything to help the integration of the Indians into the rest of society?

'CAVALRY,' INDIANS TRY HARMONY Indians and the "cavalry" are getting along much better. During a three-day conference this week, members of various Western National Guard units and Intermountain Indian tribes are discussing ways to better communicate and understand each other https://deseretnews.com |

I think many can learn from this, not just the Native American Indians:

I had a couple of thoughts while reading this. One - some tribes have had their "revenge" so to speak by having valuable resources on their land such as oil or fisheries that has brought them a great deal of wealth.
Ironically, others are trying to be classified as Indians (with support from organized crime) because gambling is legal on reservations.
However, I had a Navajo roommate and her family and reservation were poor. Her English was pretty good but I used to think most people wouldn't stop to think her grammatical errors were a result of her speaking in her non-native language and how amazing I thought it was that she was fluent in two languages. And I think it was hard to live between two worlds.
Some Americans think about...but right now most people I know are too worried about what's going to happen to them.

I wonder if they are still 'punished'? What is so wrong about 'behaving' like an American Indian? Sometimes I wish I could live one with nature and give up the concrete jungle.

EDITORIAL: ENHANCE AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION First came the boarding schools. American Indian elders still tell horror tales of being punished for speaking, behaving and thinking like an American Indian. https://deseretnews.com/ |
