A Pro-Life View During s-xual Assault Awareness Month

Ana Benderas recently shared with Live Action a video stating why she's pro-life, even when the child is the result of a rape. I, too, agree that a child should not be punished because of the crimes of his or her father. rape is never the victim's fault, but it is no more so the child's fault. No matter the method of conception, the unborn are magnificent and potential people, all loved equally by God. And they should all be loved equally by us. Source 4

Ken's Story: I Was Conceived in Rape, Don't Kill Me in Abortion

A man named Ken recently called in to a Washington, DC radio talk show discussing the question of abortion after rape. In the midst of a politically charged discussion, his personal story caught the host off guard. Ken explained that he was adopted as an infant, and at age 30, located his birth mother and learned the circumstances of his conception.

"Her story was that she was hit over the head with a baseball bat and was raped at 15. So she went away to Catholic Charities, had me, made the brave decision to keep me - and, well, keep me alive. And then I was adopted and I have three beautiful children now, have been married for 15 years - and I would just like to speak up for those [voice breaks] who have no voice." Ref. Source 9

She Bravely Rejected Abortion After Rape, Then The Rapist Sued for Paternity

A Secular Pro-Life member recently brought 31 States to my attention. This documentary film, which is still in production, tells the stories of courageous women who refused to abort their children who were conceived in rape-only to learn that the laws of their states effectively punished them for choosing life:

If you can't watch the video, the issue here is that in 31 states, a rapist can sue to obtain custody or visitation rights for the child conceived by his violence against the mother. Ref. Source 8

People Look at Me in Horror When They Learn My Daughter Was Conceived in Rape

One of the first questions I am typically asked after I share with someone that I am raising my child who was conceived when I was raped is, "Does she know yet?" - often accompanied by a look of horror.

I have learned that some regard conceiving a child conceived in rape as necessarily being shameful in itself and/or would lead to a life of fear because of the horrible crime that was committed, and that is sometimes then projected and placed on children like mine. Ref. Source 2
