Teen Girls Reportedly Make Pregnancy Pact

This is quite sad! To get pregnant on purpose, especially by a homeless man--just to "play house" and probably live off welfare....*shaking my head!*

GLOUCESTER, Massachusetts (AP) -- A pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together is at least partly behind a sudden spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School, school officials said.

Principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine in a story published Wednesday that the girls confessed to making the pact after the school began investigating a rise in pregnancies that has left 17 girls at the school carrying a child. Normally, there are about four pregnancies a year at the school.

Sullivan told Time that nearly half of the expecting students, none over 16, were involved. Sullivan said students were coming to the school clinic multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and "seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were."

Some of the girls reacted to the news they were pregnant with high fives and plans for baby showers, Sullivan said. One of the fathers "is a 24-year-old homeless guy," Sullivan told the magazine.
He said the girls are generally "girls who lack self-esteem and have a lack of love in their life."

The first reports of the students' apparent plan to get pregnant were in the Gloucester Daily Times in March, when Sullivan said students were reporting that the girls were getting pregnant on purpose.

The rash of pregnancies has shaken the seaside city about 30 miles north of Boston.

Pact Pregnancy Reportedly Girls Teen

I heard this on the news today. It left me shaking my head. They really do not have a clue what they are doing to themselves or their babies. On the news they were discussing whether or not authorities are going to charge the fathers with statutory rape. I guess in Massachusetts it is statutory rape if you have sex with anyone under 16.

This is the sort of thing that you normally see only in cinemas!
It's very sad, and also very worrying that these young girls have gone to these lengths to all get pregnant.
Let's hope for their babies sake that things work out!

UPDATE from CNN:
Seems as if they are questioning whether or not an actual "pact or agreement" was ever made--he is sticking to his story. I don't really know how they figured the students and the school WOULDN'T become a nationwide story overnight?

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- The principal of a Massachusetts high school who said a group of students intentionally got pregnant stood by his comments Thursday, saying his information "was and is accurate."

In his first public statement since the controversy erupted earlier this month, Gloucester High School principal Joseph Sullivan said he does not specifically remember using the word "pact" but does not dispute it.

He said a reporter from Time magazine asked him whether access to birth control through the school's health center would have prevented the spike in pregnancies -- 17 last year, compared with the typical four.

"I told her no, because my sources had informed me that a significant number of the pregnancies, especially among the younger students, were the result of deliberate and intentional behavior," Sullivan said.

The principal said his only direct source of information about the intentional pregnancies was the former nurse practitioner at the health center. He said he also

Sullivan called on the "affected children" to be left alone "to deal with the consequences of their actions."

"Intense media attention needs to come to a stop, as it distorts the reality of the situation by focusing attention on the sources of information about the problem of 'children having children' instead of seeking solutions to the problem itself," he said.
